Home Learning

At Kingsteignton School, we value the important role families play in supporting learning at home. Below you will find information about the home learning our children are set in each key stage.

Key Stage 1

Phonics and Reading

Children following the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme are expected to read their phonics book daily. Regular rereading helps to build fluency, accuracy and confidence.

You can support your child by:

  • Accessing Oxford Owl to find digital copies of your child’s current and previous phonics books
  • Completing the short quiz linked to each Oxford Owl book
  • Using the Speeding Up Word Reading videos (shared via Tapestry when available)
  • Reading stories together to encourage a love of reading and support reading for pleasure

Spellings

Children who no longer attend phonics lessons will be set some spellings to practise at home each week. This will consist of 6 spellings linked to the spelling rule being taught in class and 2 statutory spellings from statutory spelling list for their year group. Children can practise their spellings in any way that works best for them.

Maths

Children in Years 1 and 2 have access to Numbots, a fun online game designed to support rapid recall of key maths facts. The expectation is that all children access this website at least twice a week for 10 minutes.

Numbots

Logins for Oxford Owl and Numbots can be found in your child’s reading pack.

Key Stage 2

Half-Termly Home Learning

Each class is set a half-termly menu of tasks linked to the topics being covered that term. These may include:

  • Practical activities
  • Creative projects
  • Written tasks
  • Digital work

Children are expected to complete at least one task but may complete more if they wish.

At the end of each half-term, children share their work with their classmates to celebrate their learning.

Weekly Spellings

Children are set weekly spellings consisting of:

  • 6 words linked to the spelling rule being taught in class
  • 2 words from the statutory spelling list for their year group

Children are encouraged to practise in a way that suits them.

Maths

Children in KS2 have access to Times Table Rockstars, a fun online game designed to support rapid recall of times table facts. The expectation is that all children access this website at least twice a week for 10 minutes.

Times Tables Rockstars

Year 6

From the Spring term onwards, Year 6 pupils receive weekly homework instead of the half-termly task menu to help prepare them for the transition to secondary school. This homework is very much linked to the Statutory Assessments that they carry out in the Summer Term.
